FN(function) key stuck! Only numbers appear when letters are typed on Laptop.

Posted by: mynag In: Computer|Solution & tips

I written this post because one of my friend had this problem and he was desperate when he realized that he couldn’t seem to disable the Fn key on his laptop and whenever he typed the letters U, I, O, T, J, K , L and M, it would become numbers .

On most laptops, the Fn key is the blue colored button usually located somewhere at the left button corner of the keypad.

I called this a tip rather than a solution because if your laptop keyboard do really has a technical functionality issue, then this will not fix the problem.

This situation sometimes happen when you might have accidentally enabled the NUMLOCK. On some laptops, the numlock is activated by the Fn key. To disable the numlock, all you have to do is:

Press and hold the Fn key and look for the similary colored (usually blue) word called NumLk on the Function keys at the top row of your keyboard (F1-F12…) and press that button (remember to still press and hold the Fn key)

And Voila! The numlock should be deactivated and you should be able to type the letters you have missed so much.

OK I had the same problem but my solution was to hold down the SHIFT key and then press the NUMLK\ScrLK key. Even though I have a FUNCTION key it did not apply to this laptop, which is an IBM ThinkPad R51
