Transfer/move/copy messenger custom emoticons from one PC to another

In Windows XP, the custom emoticons are located in this folder (C:\Documents and Settings\<Window Logon name>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Messenger\<Messenger Logon name>\ObjectStore\CustomEmoticons.)

In Windows Vista/7, the custom emoticons in this folder (C:\Users\<Window Logon name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Messenger\<Messenger Logon name>\ObjectStore\CustomEmoticons).

Just copied the CustomEmoticons folder and paste it to the similar location of the target PC and restart the Windows Live Messenger. If you need step by step instructions, here it is:

Copying the MSN Custom Emoticons

On the PC running Window XP which contain the custom emoticons,

  1. Open Window Explorer
  2. Be sure that Show Hidden files is enabled.
  3. Click and expand <Documents and Settings> folder
  4. Click and select your folder that is named after your user name/login name
  5. Click and expand the folder <Local Settings>.
  6. Click and expand the folder <Application Data>.
  7. Click and expand the folder <Microsoft>.
  8. Click and expand the folder <Messenger>.
  9. Click and expand the folder that is named after your Windows Messenger user name/login name.
  10. Click and expand the folder <ObjectStore>.
  11. Select the folder called <CustomEmoticons> and copied it.

 

On the PC running Windows 7 which contain the custom emoticons

  1. Open Window Explorer
  2. Be sure that Show Hidden files is enabled.
  3. Click and expand <Users> folder
  4. Click and select your folder that is named after your user name/login name
  5. Click and expand the folder <AppData>.
  6. Click and expand the Folder <Local>.
  7. Click and expand the folder <Microsoft>.
  8. Click and expand the folder <Messenger>.
  9. Click and expand the folder that is named after your Windows Messenger user name/login name.
  10. Click and expand the folder <ObjectStore>.
  11. Select the folder called <CustomEmoticons> and copied it.

 

Transfering the MSN Custom Emoticons onto the new PC

On the PC  that is running Window XP,

  1. Open Window Explorer

  5. Click and expand the folder <Local Settings>.
  6. Click and expand the folder <Application Data>.

  8. Click and expand the folder <Messenger>.
  9. Click and expand the folder that is named after your Windows Messenger user name/login name.
  10. Click and expand the folder <ObjectStore>.
  11. Paste the copied <CustomEmoticons>.
  12. Restart Windows Live Messenger and you should have your custom emoticons back.

 

On the PC running Windows 7

  1. Open Window Explorer
  2. Be sure that Show Hidden files is enabled.

  6. Click and expand the Folder <Local>.

  10. Click and expand the folder <ObjectStore>.
  11. Paste the copied <CustomEmoticons>.
  12. Restart Windows Live Messenger and you should have your custom emoticons back.

For further information, it only helped me extract the emoticons from my Windows XP but I could not get Windows Live Messenger to recognize the added emoticons on my Windows 7 pc.

It should work because I have personally tested them myself. Be aware of the diffrerence of location as stated in this post where it should be copied from and pasted to in respect to the operating system.
