How to download & obtain subtitles (SRT) from Dailymotion videos manually using Chrome.

Posted by: mynag In: Internet|Solutions & Tips

There are many great non-English foreign films and movies available on Dailymotion especially when it comes with English subtitle. Some of you might want to download these films or movies to your tablet or smartphone for offline viewing using browser plugins such as the Video DownloadHelper or softwares such as the FLV Downloader. However the problem is that when you played these videos offline, the subtitle is not showing at all! These FLV online video download tools as at this moment, unfortunately do not automatically download the subtitles that appeared alongside the video when you watched it at the Dailymotion website.

Here, I am going to show you how you can manually download and get these Dailymotion subtitles (usually in the SRT format) using Chrome. You can also get the subtitles from Dailymotion using other browsers such as Firefox using other tools like the Firebug. The methods are pretty similar as the below.
*Note that this will only work for videos where the subtitles are uploaded to the Dailymotion and will not work for videos with subtitles already embedded into the video itself, which is kinda pointless anyway.

  1. Open the Chrome browser and go the video page where you want to download the subtitles.
  2. Open the Chrome Developer Tools by right clicking on the page and select Inspect Element.
Or you can select the Chrome Menu at the top right of the browser, then select More Tools > Developer Tools.
Or simply press CTRL + SHIFT + I.

  3. At top right corner of the Developer tools console, click on the (Magnifying glass) icon in order to select an element on the page to inspect it.

  4.  Select the video on the page which will be highlighted in blue and click on it. Once you done that, you should be seeing a portion of the scripts highlighted in gray in the Developer tools console.

  5. Select the highlighted grey portion of the scripts which should read <object type=”application/x-showckwave-flash” data=”https…….> and right click on it and select <Edit as HTML> on the pop up menu.

  6. Select the whole HTML script or text within the box by pressing CTRL + A and then pressing CTRL + C  for copy.

  7. Open Notepad or any text editing software and paste the text into it. You will see a chunk of unreadable text like the one shown below. Don’t worry, it will make sense very soon.

  8. Now, do a search on the text “.srt”  .  Select from the end of .srt all the way from the back until the word https. Refer to the diagram below to see how it is selected. Copy the text using CTRL + C.

  9. The text that you have copied would look something like this.

Now, you just need to search internet for an online URL decoder or click here in order to decode the text.
    For example: http://urldecode.org/

  10. After you have decoded the text, you will realize that text looks something like a URL. One last step to do is to replace character “\/” with “/” in the decoded URL.
Your URL should now look something like the one shown below and with that you should now be able to get the URL to the subtitle SRT file. Paste it the browser and save the it as an SRT file.
